Cass Sunstein blew his chance to be the Obama Administration’s thoughtcrime czar by openly advocating that “conspiracy-theorists” should be “cognitively infiltrated”
The thing is: I’m pretty sure this is already happening:
Take the “gun control” nonsense — on both sides.
On one side, you have a gaggle of self-proclaimed ‘Second amendment absolutists” who pants-shit endlessly about “the Feds”, and/or what any number of the “Several States” are doing in terms of infringing their “Right to keep and bear arms”.
The thing is: The “Several States” have historically been at the FOREFRONT of tyrannizing those unlucky enough to reside within their jurisdiction.
Whether we’re talking about “race”-based chattel slavery, the compulsory sterilization of the “socially” unfit etc., the “Several States” have always served exactly one substantive purpose: to denude the “Bill of Rights” of ANY substantive impact, as anything other than window-dressing.
So long as the “Bill of Rights” was viewed as only applying to the “Federal” level, it was nothing more than a series of “Glittering generalities” which could be invoked at whim, to preserve the illusion that tyranny was not “alive and well” here in the “Land of the Free”.
“States’ Rights” has always been a euphemism for: patchwork-tyranny.
So yeah: FUCK the “Several States”. The most egregious atrocities have ALWAYS originated at the “State” level, and anyone with any understanding of U.S. history already knows it.
So where does the “Cognitive infiltration” and “reverse psychology” come in?
By getting ignorant sub-animals to worship the doctrine of so-called “States’ Rights”, would-be tyrants of all stripes can be assured that they will be able to get away with ANYTHING — provided the scumfucks perpetrating it happen to originate from the “correct” level of Government.
This allowed the “Feds” to babble a morass of “glittering generalities”, while “ignoring” the undeniable fact that EVERY ONE OF THOSE “glittering generalities” were being “abridged” at the “State” level, at whim, on a daily basis:
Now, what does this have to do with “Gun control”?
FORCIBLY DISARMING A (POTENTIALLY) RECALCITRANT POPULATION CAN BE DIFFICULT AND BLOODY. TRICKING THEM INTO “VOLUNTARILY” DISARMING THEMSELVES is much easier.
For example: create the conditions which (predictably) lead to the rise of violent street gangs.
When those street gangs (predictably) battle among themselves, use this as the basis for “moral panic” over so-called “gun violence”. In particular, re-frame the murderous violence as an issue of individuals being killed “by guns”, as opposed to individuals being killed WITH guns.
(This tacitly shifts the “moral agency” to the TOOL/weapon, and AWAY from the perpetrator.)
At the same time, create/enable another, slightly different sort of “gang” comprised of paramilitary “whacker”-types who (typically) have no idea WTF they’re doing, many of whom are motivated by a blatantly-ludicrous ideology.
Re-cast the “Confederate states of America” as something OTHER than a racist slave-pen. ENSURE THAT NEOCONFEDERATE SYMPATHIZERS NEVER THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE CSA RESORTED TO MILITARY CONSCRIPTION BEFORE THE “UNION”:
Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if the ongoing “stupid-ization” among the JBS/”Militia”/Teabagger/Conspiracy “theorist” axis is the real-world equivalent of the “Brotherhood” from George Orwell’s novel Nineteen-Eighty-Four:
A series of pseudo-“legitimate” channels into which would-be insurrectionists/subversives can be “herded”, after which they can be used against their own long-range interests.
There’s no better advertisement for Civilian Disarmament (“Gun Control”) than some barely-verbal “whacker” spittle-frothing about drawing a “line in the sand”, or defending a crazed pedo-cult from scrutiny merely because the aforementioned pedo-cult happens to invoke “Christian” imagery.
This is NOT to say that federal level efforts to ensure that gun owners are “well-regulated” are a bad idea. Quite frankly, something like mandatory firearms training makes a hell of a lot of sense. Likewise, a mandatory national database of armed (and trained) citizens makes a hell of a lot of sense, if for no other reason than there is no other way to know which portions of the “unorganized militia” are actually in a position to fulfill their stated purpose.
I find it curious that so many “Second Amendment advocates” actively loathe even the suggestion that would-be gun owners should be required to know WTF they’re doing.
As one (self-proclaimed) “resident Canadian Sheeple” puts the issue:
The idea of any government intrusion into the gun culture is highly radioactive to most gun owners in the United States. But the rules of competency are just as compelling to me as the idea that the guy in the car next to me knows enough about vehicle operation to pass a minimal test. Nobody gets upset about that training program.
Quite frankly, both urban “thug”-culture and the “Militia”-whackers strike me as explicitly ensuring that a significant proportion of the “unorganized militia” is NOT “well-regulated”.
